Directions:
Option 1: write 3 600-900 word essays on the topics given below
Option 2: write 2 900-1200 word essay on two of the topics given below.

1. Apply one of the following Greek theories of myth interpretation (Theagenes', Euhemerus', or Palaephatus') to two or more of the following myths (Innana & Dumuzi, Isis & Osiris, Cybele & Attis, Dionysus in Thebes). Make sure you give specific examples to back up your conclusions and that you succintly but sufficiently state what the theory is is in your introduction.

2. From a close detailed reading of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter (Powell 229-41) what overall picture emerges of Greek culture with regard to one or more of the following: 1) Greek females, 2) Greek males, or 3) the relationship between mortals and the deities (i.e. applying Malinowski's charter theory)? If you write on 1) or 2) treat the references to the deities as if they were references to the Greek upper class. Make sure you give specific examples to back up your conclusions and that you succintly but sufficiently state what Malinowski's theory is in your introduction.

3. What do the first thirty lines or so of the following Homeric Hymns--to Apollo, Hermes, Artemis, Aphrodite, Demeter (all in Powell), and Pan (in Leeming)--tell one about Greek society (i.e. applying Malinowski's charter theory)? Make sure you give specific examples to back up your conclusions and that you succintly but sufficiently state what Malinowski's theory is in your introduction.
