1. Compare, contrast, and critique two of the following
theories of myth interpretation [Freud, Jung, Frazer, Malinowski, Levi-Strauss]
as applied to:
1. at least one of the various creation myths, one of
the myths about the Olympian (or non-Greek) gods [see review for unit II],
and one of the heroic tales [see Powell, chapters 11, 15, 18-20]
2. several of the heroic myths in one of the chapters
in Powell which we have not covered in class [i.e. Chapters 12, 14, 16,
17, and 21].
Make sure you state succinctly but accurately the central
tenets of the two theories you examine and that you use pertinent examples
from the myths to illustrate your points.
2. Self-designed: Come up with a topic of your own. You
must get the topic approved by me and must turn in a one page abstract/outline
by Monday, April 17.
