Option 1: Write two 600-1000ish word
essays
on both of the topics given below, using only class resources
(i.e. your textbooks, class notes, pdfs, assignment web links):
Society: What individual from the Iliad or the Odyssey would you like to be and
why? In answering this question, make sure you give at least three
reasons and
that you show sufficient insight into the character of the individual
you choose
Religion: As part of an oral tradition, the Homeric
poems are reflective both of the Dark Age and of the times before the
Dark Age. Show
how the Homeric
deities (or Homeric religious
practices) in many ways reflect a
continuous tradition that goes back as far as the Mycenaean culture
(and perhaps as far back as the Minoan culture), but also in many ways
do not. (FYI: better essays have examples from both epics and several
books from each epic; better essays are also synthesis papers)
Option 2: Write
one
1200-1800 word essay on one
of the topics below, using only
class resources
(i.e. your textbooks, class notes, pdfs, assignment web links):
Religion: The
Homeric poems are reflective both of the Dark Age and of the times
before the Dark Age. Show how the Homeric
deities and religious
practices in many ways reflect a
continuous tradition that goes back as far as the Mycenaean culture
(and perhaps as far back as the Minoan culture), but also in many ways
do not. (FYI: better
essays have examples from both poems and from several books from each
poem; better essays are
also synthesis papers)
Society:The Homeric poems are reflective
both of the Dark Age and of the times before the Dark Age. Examine the
status of women in the poems and the Mycenaean and Minoan
societies. (FYI: better essays have examples from
both poems and from several books from each poem; better essays are also synthesis
papers)
Heroic Code: The Homeric poems are reflective
both of the Dark Age and of the times before the Dark Age. After a
brief, but complete, definition of the Heroic Code, examine aspects of
the Heroic code that may hearken back to the Mycenaean Age and aspects
that may not (or at least we don't have evidence for). For each aspect
give good examples from the Homeric poems and from the Mycenaean Age
(if there is evidence from the Mycenaean Age). (FYI better essays use
examples from both poems and from several books from each poem).
