Cultural Norms: Starting with the
three American cultural norms that you examined in Paper 3, examine to
what extent they are also cultural norms in 3 of the mythic groups from
these chapters (e.g. treat the 3 trips to the underworld we covered
from chapter 12 as one mythic group). Answer the question of why (or why not)
in your conclusion.
Love: Examine the role of "love" in
Disney's Hercules and 2 from the list below. In your conclusion,
address your examination tells us about "love". The list:
the poetic
selections in the Heroes & the underworld,
the
selections from Sophocles' Antigone
(and what Powell gives of the plot of the play; on-line, lines 891-930
are the most important: Ian Johnson's translation;
George
Theodorides' translation)
from
Eurpides' Hippolytus,
from
Euripides' Medea.
"Every hero has a weakness"
(paraphrased from the movie): Based on the evidence in Powell or the
movie, is this true for 3 of the following heroes: Jason, Oedipus,
Perseus, Heracles, Hercules. If so, demonstrate what the weakness is;
if not, demonstrate why not (don't consider being able to die as a
possible weakness--that is not what Hades had in mind when he made that
statement).
