Due Wednesday, March 28
(in both paper and electronic form)
Directions: Write three 600-1000 word essays. Choose from the topics given below.
2. We have seen that the actions and attributes of the Greek gods and goddesses were patterned on the Greeks themselves and serve to define the place of the Greeks within their society. After a careful review of the myths of the Greek goddesses, what do these myths tell us about the extent to which Greek women had control over their lives?
3. A key aim for a Greek male aristocrat was the pursuit of success, fame, and glory. In many ways the myths which we have studied in this unit (see above) can be looked upon as defining the ways an individual can pursue such success, fame, and glory. Discuss.
4. Comparative Mythology: Compare a Greek myth with two non-Greek myths that either relate to the archetype of trickster, great mother, or dying god. From this comparison determine what may be cultural in each of these myths and what may be archetypal. What conclusions, if any, can you draw?
