Directions:
    Option 1: write three 600-900 word essays on the topics given below
    Option 2: write two 900-1200 word essays on two of the topics given below

Topics:

1. Politics: An aid to President Bush recently noted "Every silver lining has a cloud" (NPR: AIDS Funding, 2/11/03). Examine the Roman policy towards those whom they defeated/conquered between 509 and 49 BC with regard to that quote, i.e. delineate, in your discussion, what the "silver lining(s)" of the Roman policy was(were) and what the "cloud(s)" was(were). As usual, make sure you give a plethora of pertinent facts/examples to back up your conclusions (use Shelton, Kebric, Scarre, and/or class notes as your sources of information).

2. Slaves & Freedpersons: An aid to President Bush recently noted "Every silver lining has a cloud" (NPR: AIDS Funding, 2/11/03). Compare and contrast the lot of slaves and the lot of freedpersons with regard to that quote. Make sure you give a plethora of pertinent facts/examples from the readings in Shelton and Kebric to back up your conclusions and that these are based on a variety of authors/sources.

3. Religion: An aid to President Bush recently noted "Every silver lining has a cloud" (NPR: AIDS Funding, 2/11/03). Examine the advantages and disadvantages of Roman religion for the "average" Roman with regard to that quote. Make sure you give a plethora of pertinent facts/examples from the readings to back up your conclusions and that these are based on a variety of authors/sources.
