Write on
one of
the
following topics, if you didn't write on it for paper 5:
1. Compare and contrast
Lucilla, from the movie Gladiator, with Vibia Perpetua. While
doing
that, also answer what the significance of the similarities and
differences
are. As always, make sure you give specific examples, especially from
the
primary evidence, to back up your conclusions.
2. Shelton notes "Romans defended
their bloody spectacles on the grounds that the agonizing slaughter of
the participants inspired in the audience an ennobling contempt for
death" (350). Argue whether this is true aim of the "spectacles" within
the movie or whether they had a different aim (and detail what that aim
was, if different).
3. [New
topic] Based solely on the movie and the
readings in Kebric and the following web biography (click here) and
class discussion, compare and contrast the
"Commodus" of the movie and Elagabalus. Conclusions? [Citing web

in Kebric and the indented passages in Shelton) and are not commentary
by Shelton or Kebric.

- ancient author (if
there is one) in the body of your paper and at the
end of the sentence give the modern author and page number(s) in parentheses, e.g. Martial
says "..." (Shelton, 70). or Aelius Aristides describes the various
things one can get in Rome, thus " ..." (Kebric, 3).
- If no
ancient author, then indicate the type of source, e.g. one papyrus
letter
from a son to his mother says "..." (Kebric, 2-3).
- If you are unsure
whether there is an author or not, Shelton has an appendix that lists
the various sources.
