Due
at beginning of class
(in
both paper and electronic form)
Directions: Write
either two 600-1000 word essays (one dealing with Slaves &
Freedpersons or Religion, the other dealing with politics) or write one
1200-1800 word essay (use any one of the topics below). As usual, make
sure
you cite correctly and that you back up your conclusions with solid
pieces of evidence. For these essays, use evidence solely from the
readings for this unit and class notes. Don't forget to include a
bibliography (see the previous paper 2 for formatting of bibliography).
Slaves & Freedpersons: Several years ago, an aid
to President Bush reversed the typical saying "Every cloud has a silver
lining" to "Every silver lining has a cloud" (NPR:
AIDS Funding, 2/11/03). Compare and contrast the lot of slaves and
the lot of freedpersons with regard to the aid's statement: "Every
silver lining has a cloud". Make sure you give a
plethora of pertinent facts/examples solely from the readings in
Shelton and
Kebric (and class lecture, if you wish) to back up your conclusions and
that these are based on a
variety
of authors/sources. Also keep in mind the biases in the evidence.
Religion:Use Shelton #420 and 421 and
the stories
about Eunus and the Sicilian slave
revolt and the revolt of Spartacus as a springboard for a discussion of
Roman religion. As usual, make sure you give a plethora of pertinent
facts/examples, starting with the above evidence, to back up your
conclusions. Restrict your evidence base to the readings for this unit
and class notes.
Politics: Explain the impact and
importance of 3 Roman Leaders from 3 different time "periods".
Kingship: Romulus, Brutus, Lucretia,
Tarquinius Superbus, Tarquinius Sextus
Later Republic: Cornelia, Tiberius
Gracchus, Gaius Gracchus, Marius, Sulla
End of the Republic: Pompey,
Crassus, Caesar, Brutus
