Write
on
one of the topics
below:
1. Odysseus makes the following comment
about marriage when talking to Nausicaa: "Lastly, I pray that the gods
may grant you a husband and home, a household of peace and love, for
nothing is dearer or finer than concord of husband and wife who share
their hopes for the family, the envy of all their foes and the glory of
those who respect them." (Homer, Odyssey,
6.180-185
in
Powell, p 612). Using this quote, examine 2-3 of the
couples in Powell's book, chapters 19-20, entitled "The Trojan War" and
"The Fall of Troy."
2. Determine and
demonstrate who is
more heroic -- Orestes or Telemachus -- (and who less), using the
material in chapters 20-21 of Powell and class discussion of both.
Start with a brief description of the Heroic Code as covered in class;
then use this definition when determining who is more "heroic" (and who less).
