Dual Degree Engineering at Westminster College

For requirements, please visit the course catalog.

Why Participate in the Dual Degree Engineering Program at Westminster?

The Dual Degree Engineering Program at Westminster College combines the best of a liberal arts education at a small intimate college with the facilities and recognition of a large well-known university. By pursuing a dual-degree program of study, you optimize your investment in your education by earning two degrees in as few as five years.

Graduates of this program develop strong written and oral communication, problem solving, and teamwork skills. A strong liberal arts background better prepares engineers to anticipate and adapt to the ever-changing multidisciplinary world of technology.

Our dual-degree program opens up more career opportunities for students than a standard engineering curriculum. Students can build careers in either field or use their interdisciplinary knowledge to create a tailored career path.

How The Dual-Degree Engineering Program Works

  • Spend three to four years at Westminster building a strong foundation in the humanities and social sciences while completing a Pre-Engineering minor and the major of your choice (typically Math or Physics).
  • Complete your engineering studies at one of Westminster's partner institutions (Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri S&T, or Southern Illinois University - Carbondale).

After approximately five years, you will have earned two degrees: a Bachelor of Arts from Westminster College AND a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

Dual degrees - plus enhanced written and verbal communication skills earned through the liberal arts experience - give grads a competitive advantage in their careers.

Cool Classes/Experiences

During your time at Westminster, you will have a myriad of opportunities to learn what engineering is all about. Get your first taste freshman year by enrolling in Westminster's Introduction to Engineering and Design course. Not only will this 3-hour course introduce you to the engineering profession, it will lay the foundation for your future studies by immersing you in the engineering design process from investigation to manufacture, assembly, and product evaluation. Through this course, you'll be able to better determine if engineering is the right career path for you.

Westminster offers personalized attention in introductory math and science courses - no 300-person lecture classes here! The result is a stronger foundation and ultimately greater success in future coursework.

As you progress in your studies, you'll also have opportunities to visit our dual-degree partner institutions to tour facilities and meet with transfer admissions staff, faculty in your field(s) of interest, and current engineering students.

Career Opportunities

  • Engineers do more than just design the world around you. Their work links scientific knowledge with the commercial applications that meet societal and consumer needs.
  • According to the U.S. Department of Labor, "overall engineering employment is expected to grow by 11 percent over the 2008-2018 decade."
  • Engineers are ranked fourth on the list of the most difficult positions to fill worldwide according to a survey conducted by the staffing research firm Manpower.
  • A dual-degree from Westminster and one of its partner schools offers degree candidates greater marketability and more flexibility in career paths.
