attached file should be:
S14-228-P3-Last Name, First Name (e.g. S14-228-P3-Leuci, Victor)
paper copy: bring to class
length: 600-1000ish
Citing the music video:
if you give the artist's name and the name of the song/video in your opening paragraph, then no in-text citations are needed. Just make sure you have concrete examples from the music video.
Citing Catullus' poem:
in your opening paragraph indicate that you are examining Catullus Poems 61 from Shelton's book, pages 40-42.
every time you need an in-text citation, just give the line numbers from the poem (see the pdf in Moodle) in parentheses at the end of the sentence.
Citing other primary sources (from Shelton's book):
give the ancient author (if there is one) in the body of your paper and at the end of the sentence give the modern author and page number(s) in parentheses, e.g. Martial says "..." (Shelton, 70).
if there is no ancient author, then indicate the type of source, e.g. a guest "scratched on a wall" the following, " ... " (Shelton, 68) or a milestone notes ... (Shelton, 68)
if you are unsure whether there is an author or not, Shelton has an appendix that lists the various sources.
Works Cited "Page" reminders:
to save paper, don't put on a separate page
in the same font and font size, etc. as your main text
use hanging indents
use MLA 7th edition (see syllabus for how the entry for Shelton's book should look)
music video: see the pdf in Moodle on MLA7 on what the entry should look like
writing intensive:
Don't forget to turn in the draft copy with my or the Writing labs' comments on it for it to count towards your revised paper total (and don't forget to make the revisions!)
print this out and bring this to your writing lab conference and have the tutor sign here: ______________________________________
Write on one of the following topics:
Using solely the material in Shelton's Chapter XIII, compare/contrast Pliny the Younger's depictions of specific women with Juvenal's depiction of women in general. For Pliny, use #325, 328, 331 & 332. For Juvenal, use #336-337.
Ovid complains about what his girl-friend did to her hair in #347 on page 306 in Shelton's book. How modern does his complaints and/or his relationship with her seem? If you would like to use the full poem, here it is: click here.
Songs (and videos) are reflective of the cultures that they come from. Compare/contrast the marriage song by Catullus on pages 40-43 in Shelton's book (or here on-line: click here) with the music video by Carly Rae Jepsen "Call Me Maybe."
