Directions:
- electronic copy: e-mail me at victor.leuci@westminster-mo.edu; the name of your
attached file should be:
- for Exam 4: F13-215-E4-Last Name, First Name (e.g. F13-215-E4-Leuci, Victor)
- for Paper 6: F13-215-P6-Last Name, First Name (e.g. F13-215-P6-Leuci, Victor)
- paper copy: bring to class or drop off in the box outside my office prior to the start of the in-class exam
- In-text Citations
- you must have in-text citations for your sources of information (facts, theories, parts of myths, etc.)
- every main body paragraph should have in-text citations (you want at least 2 good examples with citations per paragraph)
- for Powell's text, whenever citing a classical author, follow the same directions as for papers 4-5
-
for the movie make sure you
- have a works cited entry and that it is correct (see below for what it should look like)
- have good concrete examples, but you don't have to have in-text citations provided that you have mentioned what the name of the movie is in your introduction. However, if you use a copy of the script for direct quotes, then you do need an in-text citation: (Benioff, "script, Troy") and you will need to include an entry for the script in your works cited "page."
- for the on-line translation:
- make sure you include the following--the ancient author, the title of the ancient work in italics, the numbering from the ancient work.
- it is probably best to work some of these into your main body text instead of saving them for the citation itself
- example: Homer, in the Odyssey, has Zeus say "It's disgraceful how these humans blame the gods. They say their tribulations come from us, when they themselves, through their own foolishness, bring hardships which are not decreed by Fate" (I. 41-44).
- Works Cited "Page" reminders:
- to save paper, don't put on a separate page
- in the same font, size, etc. as your main text
- use hanging indents
- for the movie here is what the entry should look like: Troy. Dir. Wolfgang Petersen. Perf. Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, Diane Kruger, Brian Cox, Sean Bean, Brendan Gleeson, and Peter O'Toole. Warner Bros. Pictures, 2004. DVD.
- entries for classical texts from on-line source should list the ancient author first, the the work (in italics), then the translator, then the web page, the publisher of the web page, date for work(if given). Web. date accessed.
- use MLA 7th edition (see syllabus for how the entries for our textbooks should look)

- Exam, Option 2: Write one 1200-1800 word essay on one of the topics below:
- Paper: chose one of the topics below and write a 600-100ish word essay (note: you can't write on the same topic for both paper 6 and the exam!)
Topics:
- Xenia; Movie & myth: Compare the interaction between Achilles and Priam in the movie Troy, and the Iliad, Bk 24.
- Xenia; Iliad & Odyssey Compare Telemachus's and Achilles' actions and words in the Iliad, Book 24, & the Odyssey, book 1, from the standpoint of xenia.
- Honor & Shame and the myth: Examine some of the ways these concepts play out in book 21 or book 24 of the Odyssey. For the longer paper write on both books.
- Honor & Shame and the movie: Examine some of the ways that these concepts drive the plot of the movie.
- Religion (Prayer, Vow, Sacrifice, Divination) & the myth: Examine some of the ways these concepts play out in book 24 of the Iliad or book 1 of the Odyssey. For the longer paper write on both books.
- Religion (Prayer, Vow, Sacrifice, Divination) & the movie: Examine some of the ways that these concepts are woven into the plot of the movie.
- Reminder 1: use only class notes or the pdf in Moodle for the definition of Xenia, Honor & Shame, and Religion (Prayer, Vow, Sacrifice, Divination) and use only the movie or the script for Troy and the on-line text for the Iliad (click here) or the (click here)
- Reminder 2: if doing paper 6, you can't use the same specific topic for paper 6 and Exam 4. E.g. it is okay if Paper 6 is about Honor/Shame in the myth and the Essay question for the exam is about honor/shame in the movie. It is unacceptable if both are about honor/shame in the myth.
