Directions:
- electronic copy: e-mail me at victor.leuci@westminster-mo.edu; the name of your
attached file should be:
- F15-215-E3-Last Name, First Name (e.g. F15-215-E3-Leuci, Victor)
- paper copy: bring to class or drop off in the box outside my office prior to the start of the in-class exam
- In-text Citations
- you must have in-text citations for your sources of information (facts, theories, parts of myths, etc.)
- every main body paragraph should have in-text citations (you want at least 2 good examples with citations per paragraph)
- when citing the ancient material from Maurizio's text book, mention the ancient author (if there is one), the ancient work (in italics), then the page number in Maurizio's book
- for the movie make sure you
- have a works cited entry that is correct (see below for what it should look like)
- have good concrete examples, but you don't have to have in-text citations provided that you have mentioned what the name of the movie is in your introduction. However, if you use a copy of the script for direct quotes, then you do need an in-text citation: (Benioff, "script, Troy") and you will need to include an entry for the script in your works cited "page."
- Works Cited "Page" reminders:
- to save paper, don't put on a separate page
- in the same font, font size, etc. as your main text
- use hanging indents
- works' cited entries for ancient authors from Maurizio's text book should follow the same format as the following example: Virgil. The Aeneid. In Classical Myth in Context. Laura Maurizio. New York: Oxford University Press. 2015. Print.
- for the movie here is what the entry should look like: Troy. Dir. Wolfgang Petersen. Perf. Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, Diane Kruger, Brian Cox, Sean Bean, Brendan Gleeson, and Peter O'Toole. Warner Bros. Pictures, 2004. DVD.
- Length:
- Option 1: Write two 600-1000ish word essays on the two topics given below:
- Option 2: Write one 1200-1800 word essay on one of the topics below:
Topics:
- Topic 1:
- Source material: Maurizio, Ch 10; the movie Troy
- Prompt: You have come into possession of a time portal that will allow you to visit the past (but without affecting the time continuum, i.e. you can't change the past or communicate with individuals), but it has some restrictions. You must submit your request in writing to the portal and demonstrate that you have good cause to visit (or it may refuse your request). Based solely on the sources above, determine and demonstrate whether you would want to go back as Achilles from the movie or Achilles from the text — with a focus on their "character-traits" or "nature." In the main body of your essay, indicate why you rank them in the order you do (i.e. evidence for why your second choice is less desirable than your first). Remember, the portal is very particular about whom it lets go through and requires a request that contains good argumentation and good supporting facts (make sure you have good supporting facts from the Iliad in Maurizio, though you may use her descriptions as well). [Option 2: also rank Heracles (may also rank Theseus, if you wish)]
- Topic 2:
- Source material: Maurizio, Ch 11; the movie Troy
- Prompt: You have come into possession of a time portal that will allow you to visit the past (but without affecting the time continuum, i.e. you can't change the past or communicate with individuals), but it has some restrictions. You must submit your request in writing to the portal and demonstrate that you have good cause to visit (or it may refuse your request). Based solely on the sources above, determine and demonstrate whether you would want to go back as Briseis from the movie or Medea (Euripides' version) — with a focus on their "character-traits" or "nature." In the main body of your essay, indicate why you rank them in the order you do (i.e. evidence for why your second choice is less desirable than your first). Remember, the portal is very particular about whom it lets go through and requires a request that contains good argumentation and good supporting facts (make sure you have good supporting facts from the Euripides' Medea in Maurizio, though you may use her descriptions as well). [Option 2: also rank Clytemnestra (may also rank Hecuba, if you wish)]
- Topic 3 (option 1 only):
- Source material: the movie Troy
- Prompt: Demonstrate which of the 5 traits of a hero, as defined by Maurizio, Achilles fulfills, using only the movie Troy as your source. [option 1 only]
