- In-text Citations
- you must have in-text citations for your sources of information (facts, theories, parts of stories, etc.)
- every main body paragraph should have in-text citations (you want at least 2 good examples with citations per paragraph)
- for Thucydides, give the number in brackets, e.g. "No movement ever stirred Hellas more deeply than this" (Thuc. 1.1) or (1.1) if you've already mentioned Thucydides
- for the Apple event mention the speaker and the setting at the beginning of your paper. If you do this, you won't need to include in-text citations for the speech.
- should be very specific as the citations are evidence that you have looked at very specific, very concrete things in the texts, etc.
- Works Cited "Page" reminders:
- to save paper, don't put on a separate page
- in the same font, font size, etc. as your main text
- use hanging indents
- use MLA 7th edition
- for the Apple event, list the speaker first. Speech at "A celebration of Steve's life." Apple Inc. 19 Oct, 2011. date accessed.
- for Thucydides, use what I've provided at the beginning of both print and phone versions.
- writing intensive:
- Don't forget to turn in the draft copy with my or the Writing labs' comments on it for it to count towards your revised paper total (and don't forget to make the revisions!)
- print this out and bring this to your writing lab conference and have the tutor sign here: _______________________
Write on one of the following topics:
In Thucydides' History, instead of giving a typical funeral oration when all the Athenians gathered to commemorate those who had died in the first year of the war, Pericles gives a funeral oration celebrating Athens. Similarly, when Apple Computer took a moment to gather all its employees at its headquarters and via weblink all its employees at all of its stores worldwide to have a commemorative "service" for Steve Jobs, it did something similar to what Pericles did.
Compare (and/or contrast) one of the following speeches (Tim Cook, Bill Campbell, former Vice-Pres Al Gore) with Pericles' funeral oration. I've included below a link to the web video for the Apple event and the approximate times at which each of the speeches begins and ends. Make sure you give concrete examples from both Pericles' speech and the speech/performance you chose to use
