Write on one of the following topics:

• Aristotle, in his Politics, states that the male possesses "the rational ... element" (1260a). Examine closely the two speeches Socrates used in his defense (as given in Plato's Apology, pp 19-36 and 36-38) and, based on that examination, argue to what extent Socrates defense was rational (or irrational).


• Socrates' trial was a public case and subject to the rules of such. If it had been a private case, then Socrates' accusers would have been allowed a short amount of time to reply to his defense. Using The Apology, pp. 19-36 (Socrates' initial speech), determine what the accusers' would probably have said in reply to Socrates' defense.


• Two of the charges leveled against were "he does not believe in the gods of the state" and "has other new divinities of his own." What evidence can you find in his three speeches in Plato's Apology that the charges were valid?
